PM Shehbaz Chairs Apex Committee Meeting to Review KP Security Situation

Peshawar, 22 October, 2026 (Nosheen): Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is chairing an apex committee meeting in Peshawar to review the overall security situation and law and order challenges in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP). The prime minister arrived in Peshawar on Thursday for a one-day visit, his first since the imposition of governor’s rule and an emergency in the province. Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi are accompanying him, according to official sources. The meeting, being held at the Governor House, is reviewing the province’s security situation and considering measures to strengthen peace and stability. Shehbaz Sharif is also expected to meet KP Governor Faisal Karim Kundi to discuss key development projects planned for the province. The visit comes amid significant political and administrative changes following the imposition of an emergency and governor’s rule on October 11. President Asif Ali Zardari approved the measures under Articles 232 and 234 of the Constitution, respectively, following a recommendation by the federal cabinet. The federal government cited the deteriorating security situation and what it described as inadequate cooperation from the PTI-led provincial government in counterterrorism efforts. Following the decision, Chief Minister Sohail Afridi, his cabinet and advisers ceased to hold office, while executive authority shifted to Governor Faisal Karim Kundi. The federal government also announced an 11-member advisory council to assist the governor and established a separate Area Development Secretariat for 12 districts affected by terrorism: Dera Ismail Khan, Tank, Lakki Marwat, Bannu, Bajaur, Mohmand, Khyber, Kurram, Orakzai, Upper South Waziristan, Lower South Waziristan and North Waziristan. Additionally, the federal government authorised the deployment of the Pakistan Army under Article 245 of the Constitution to assist the civil administration.
