United Nations, August 28, 2025(Ghufran Majeed): With Haiti’s humanitarian crisis deepening to perilous levels, Pakistan has called on the UN Security Council to act urgently and decisively to prevent the country from descending into complete collapse.
In a national statement delivered during the Council’s briefing on Haiti, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, described the situation as “a convergence of governance collapse, rampant gang violence, and a humanitarian emergency of immense proportions.”
He stressed that the international community could no longer turn a blind eye to the suffering of the Haitian people, particularly children, who bear the heaviest burden of the crisis. “Silence and indifference would condemn millions of Haitians to despair and signal to the world that the Security Council had failed in the fulfillment of its Charter responsibility,” the Ambassador warned.
Ambassador Asim highlighted alarming figures: 1.3 million displaced persons, over 6 million people in urgent need of assistance, and 2.85 million facing acute food insecurity, with 1 million at emergency levels. He pointed to blocked humanitarian aid, unchecked violence, and severe underfunding as key factors fueling the worsening chaos.
While emphasizing the importance of humanitarian assistance, he underlined that aid alone was insufficient. He urged Haiti’s leadership to rise above internal divisions and strengthen the Transitional Presidential Council, cautioning that fragile gains could unravel without unity and commitment.
Calling for the dismantling of armed gangs and the restoration of governance institutions, Ambassador Asim commended the Kenyan-led Multinational Security Support Mission for its resilience under challenging conditions and urged the Security Council to provide robust backing. “Lasting peace must be Haitian-led, and supported by sustained international backing,” he stressed.
The Ambassador welcomed the engagement of regional partners, including the Dominican Republic, Barbados, and CARICOM members, in supporting Haiti’s recovery, and reaffirmed the vital role of BINUH in stabilization efforts.
Reiterating Pakistan’s solidarity with the Haitian people, Ambassador Asim underscored the need for “concrete and coordinated international action” to safeguard Haiti’s fragile progress. “They cannot be left to violence and despair. This is a test of the international community’s resolve. Collective, timely, and bold action is indispensable,” he concluded.
