*Pakistan Supports UN Resolution on DRC, Calls for Peaceful Resolution of the Conflict*

*United Nations, February 21, 2025:* Pakistan has stated that the adoption of the resolution by consensus on DRC reaffirms Security Council’s strong commitment to the sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity of the Democratic Republic of Congo, and upholds the UN Charter principles.

Explaining why Pakistan voted in favor of the resolution, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, Alternate Permanent Representative to the U.N., said that more importantly, the resolution welcomes and supports the regional efforts and processes, and high-level engagements led by the African Union and other sub-regional organizations to bring peace to the DRC.

He said Pakistan expects and calls on all parties to cooperate and fully comply with the provisions of this resolution and their respective obligations in a genuine and timely manner.

Ambassador Asim Iftikhar said that for several weeks now the situation in the Eastern DRC has going down the dangerous downward spiral, with dire humanitarian consequences. He said that the developing situation has served a blow to the efforts for peace and stability in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

He said that the United Nations and the Security Council itself, including through the peacekeeping mission, invested heavily for the success of this endeavor, arguing that failure was not an option.

Ambassador Asim said that the Council was right to keep a close watch over the developments as manifested by a series of meetings in recent weeks.

“It was also logical for this Council to pronounce itself quickly and clearly to fulfill its responsibility to help restore peace and security in the Eastern DRC,” he added.

He said that Pakistan considers the resolution as an important and necessary step towards that objective.

Pakistan’s Alternate UN envoy said that all parties should recognize that there is no military solution to the conflict, and argued that they must, therefore, prioritize dialogue and diplomacy and recommit to the peace and mediation processes.

He asked the Security Council to continue to accord the attention that the situation demands, and also review the role and mandate of MONUSCO to better correspond to the situation on ground.
