Iran Urges US to Accept Proposal to Reopen Strait of Hormuz

DUBAI, 19 October, 2026 (Kamran Raja): Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi has said Tehran’s proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days remains on the table, but progress depends on Washington accepting Iran’s seven conditions. Speaking to Iranian media while in Baghdad to attend a meeting of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, Araqchi said the United States had shared its comments on the proposal, which Iran was reviewing. He added that Tehran remained ready to move forward if Washington demonstrated sincerity. Iran submitted the proposal in mid-September following the collapse of an interim ceasefire. However, negotiations have since stalled, with Iranian officials saying the United States has failed to address all seven conditions. These include lifting the US blockade on Iranian ports, removing sanctions on Iranian oil exports and ending hostilities across all regional fronts. Araqchi said the Strait of Hormuz could be reopened within six days if Washington accepted Tehran’s conditions, with negotiations resuming the following day. A major point of disagreement remains the US demand to address Iran’s nuclear programme from the outset of any negotiations. Earlier this month, US Vice President JD Vance said Iran must make a meaningful reduction in its uranium enrichment capacity to meet Washington’s demands and help end the eight-month conflict between the two countries. Tehran, however, insists that initial negotiations should focus on reopening the Strait of Hormuz and restoring security in the strategic waterway before other issues are addressed. Before the war, the strait served as a critical route for global energy supplies, carrying approximately one-fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas trade. The future of the proposal remains uncertain as both sides continue to differ over the conditions for resuming negotiations.
