New York, 22 September, 2026 (Kamran Raja): United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed concern over growing divisions and polarization in the world, warning that further global fragmentation could have serious consequences. Addressing the opening session of the United Nations General Assembly, Guterres said the world was increasingly divided into two camps and urged countries to prevent further polarization. He said wars that began over the past decade had caused devastating consequences, while conflicts continued amid growing indifference. The UN chief said innocent civilians had been targeted in wars, human rights had been violated and hunger had been used as a weapon. Guterres called on all parties to respect international law and stressed that no problem could be resolved through the use of force. Expressing concern over the situation in the Middle East, he said tensions remained high in the region and violations of ceasefire arrangements were continuing.
