ISLAMABAD,16 September, 2026 (Kamran Raja): Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif chaired a review meeting in Islamabad today to assess progress on the PM Special Relief Scheme aimed at providing relief to low-income and middle-class citizens amid rising petroleum prices due to the Gulf situation. Under the scheme, fuel subsidies are being provided to owners of motorcycles, rickshaws and vehicles with engine capacities of up to 800cc. The prime minister directed the establishment of facilitation desks comprising administration officials, volunteers and petrol station staff to make it easier for citizens to obtain the subsidy. He said personnel at the facilitation desks should guide eligible citizens and provide all possible assistance during registration and other necessary procedures. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also directed the relevant authorities to remain active in creating public awareness about the scheme and ensuring that citizens have easy access to the relief facility.
During the meeting, the prime minister was briefed on progress under the fuel subsidy scheme. Officials said that following the launch of the pilot project in Islamabad, the scheme has now been launched across the country, including Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan. The briefing noted that the registration process has been kept simple, requiring only four basic pieces of information: the applicant’s CNIC number, vehicle number plate, province of registration and vehicle registration date. Officials said the number of successful registrations is gradually increasing, while provincial governments are extending full cooperation for the nationwide implementation of the scheme. Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Muhammad Ishaq Dar, Federal Ministers Ahsan Khan Cheema, Attaullah Tarar, Shaza Fatima Khawaja and Ali Pervez Malik, Minister of State for Finance Bilal Azhar Kayani, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Tariq Bajwa and senior officials of the relevant institutions attended the meeting.
