Rennes Beat Marseille to Seize Top Spot in Ligue 1

RENNES, 12 September 2026 (Ghufran): Adrien Thomasson scored the only goal as Rennes defeated Marseille 1-0 on Friday to move provisionally to the top of Ligue 1, while Marseille suffered their third consecutive defeat. Thomasson struck from close range early in the second half after Mousa Al-Tamari nodded the ball back across the goal, giving Rennes their third straight victory. The Rennes forward later saw another effort hit the crossbar, but his side held on to move onto 10 points, one ahead of Monaco. Monaco, who have won all three of their matches so far, can reclaim top spot when they travel to Strasbourg on Saturday. Marseille created several chances but struggled to find the net, with their limited activity in the summer transfer window raising concerns about the depth of their squad. Financial difficulties following their failure to qualify for the Champions League led Marseille to sell several key players, including top scorer Mason Greenwood and Dutch midfielder Quinten Timber, without bringing in replacements. New coach Bruno Genesio is now working with a squad that includes players who were on the fringes last season and others returning from loan spells. Marseille opened the campaign with a 4-0 victory over Strasbourg but have failed to collect a point since. Their next fixtures include a Europa League trip to Besiktas and a home match against Paris Saint-Germain.
