LONDON, 11 September 2026 (Kamran Raja): Princess Diana’s iconic “revenge dress”, one of the most memorable fashion statements in royal history, is set to go on sale for the first time in nearly three decades, with the legendary black evening gown expected to fetch up to $300,000 at auction. Designed by Greek fashion designer Christina Stambolian, the figure-hugging silk dress will be unveiled at Sotheby’s London on September 18 before travelling to Hong Kong, Geneva and New York ahead of the December 9 auction. Diana wore the striking shoulder-baring dress to a party at London’s Serpentine Gallery on June 29, 1994, the same day her then-husband, now-King Charles III, publicly admitted in a television documentary that he had been unfaithful. She completed the look with black heels, a clutch, bold red nails and a distinctive jewelled choker featuring an antique diamond and sapphire brooch gifted to her by the Queen Mother. The outfit quickly became known as the “revenge dress” and played a significant role in reshaping Diana’s public image, becoming a symbol of confidence and self-possession. Stambolian later revealed that the dress had remained in Diana’s wardrobe for three years because she considered it too daring, while her stylist Anna Harvey said Diana wanted to “look a million dollars” that evening. The gown was last sold in June 1997 when Diana auctioned 79 outfits to raise funds for breast cancer and AIDS charities. It was later featured at charity events in Scotland and displayed at Paisley Museum. A catalogue from the original 1997 sale, signed by Diana and Stambolian, will also be included in the auction. The dress will be displayed in London until September 24, followed by an exhibition in Hong Kong from October 1 to 15, Geneva from November 6 to 11 and New York from December 2 until the auction. Some proceeds from the sale will benefit NHS Lothian Charity.
