
ISLAMABAD, 8 September, 2026 (Ghufran): Pakistan Navy Day is being observed on Tuesday to pay tribute to the heroes of the 1965 War who demonstrated exceptional courage, professionalism and determination in defending the country against a much larger adversary. The day commemorates the historic Operation Somnath, during which Pakistan Navy warships successfully targeted critical shore installations, inflicting significant damage on the enemy. During the 1965 War, the submarine PNS/M Ghazi emerged as a formidable deterrent and symbolised Pakistan Navy’s operational capability and strategic strength. On Pakistan Navy Day, the nation pays homage to the officers and personnel of the Pakistan Navy for their sacrifices and their continued role in safeguarding Pakistan’s maritime frontiers, coastal security and national interests. The Pakistan Navy’s courage and strategic competence during the 1965 War remain a proud chapter in the country’s defence history, with Operation Somnath remembered as a notable example of professional excellence and resolve. Beyond its role in defending maritime boundaries, the Pakistan Navy continues to contribute to maritime security, protection of sea trade routes, international peacekeeping efforts and humanitarian assistance during natural disasters.
