Pakistan Urges UN to Address Israeli Occupation and Settlement Expansion

UNITED NATIONS, 27 August, 2026(Ghufran): Pakistan has urged the international community to take concrete measures to address Israel’s continued occupation of Palestinian territories, warning that lasting peace in the region cannot be achieved as long as settlement expansion, settler violence and the forced displacement of Palestinians continue.Speaking before the United Nations Security Council, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative Asim Iftikhar Ahmad highlighted the deteriorating situation in the occupied Palestinian territories and questioned the effectiveness of the ceasefire in view of continued Israeli attacks. He said more than 1,200 Palestinians had been killed since the ceasefire, raising serious questions about how the truce could be considered effective while attacks against Palestinians continued.Asim Iftikhar stressed that illegal Israeli settlements and the forced displacement of Palestinians must come to an end. He also said the annexation of occupied territories should not be accepted, noting that all members of the Security Council opposed such actions. The Pakistani envoy called for those responsible for war crimes and other serious violations to be held accountable. He said meaningful and lasting peace required not only political commitments but also justice and accountability. Reaffirming Pakistan’s unwavering support for the Palestinian people, he said Islamabad would continue to stand with them in their struggle for the right to self-determination.Pakistan, he added, believed that a just, comprehensive and lasting settlement remained the only viable path towards durable peace and stability in the region. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s support for an independent and sovereign Palestinian state based on the pre-1967 borders, with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as its capital.
