MACKAY, 22 August, 2026 (News Desk): Australia secured a 101-run first-innings lead over Bangladesh on the opening day of the second Test in Mackay on Saturday, with 18 wickets falling in a dramatic day dominated by fast bowling. Australia captain Pat Cummins won the toss and elected to bowl, with his pace attack making an immediate impact as the hosts looked to bounce back from their shock nine-wicket defeat in the first Test in Darwin. Mitchell Starc produced a remarkable spell of swing and seam bowling, claiming five wickets in just 22 balls during the morning session. He finished with outstanding figures of 6-12 from 10 overs as Bangladesh were bowled out for only 64. Bangladesh avoided their lowest-ever Test total of 43, recorded against the West Indies in 2018, thanks to a 25-run last-wicket partnership between Taijul Islam, who remained unbeaten on 11, and Shoriful Islam, who scored 14. Australia also struggled with the bat and ended the day at 165-8, holding a 101-run lead. Cameron Green, who scored a century in the first Test in Darwin, remained unbeaten on 51 alongside Nathan Lyon on 10.Shoriful, returning from injury after missing the opening Test, was Bangladesh’s standout bowler, claiming a career-best 6-35. Australia initially made a steady start but soon lost three wickets for 19 runs. Matt Renshaw, recalled after Jake Weatherald was dropped following the Darwin Test, was dismissed for eight after edging Taskin Ahmed to Tanzid Hasan at third slip. Travis Head fell for 22, bowled by Shoriful, who struck again to remove an under-pressure Marnus Labuschagne for four. Steve Smith appeared settled while making 42 but was eventually trapped lbw by Shoriful. Alex Carey was dismissed for five after holing out off Mehidy Hasan Miraz.Shoriful continued his outstanding spell by dismissing Beau Webster without scoring and then removing Cummins two balls later, with wicketkeeper Litton Das taking the catch. He later bowled Mitchell Starc for one, keeping Bangladesh firmly in contention at the end of a remarkable opening day.
