New York, September 26, 2025(Kamran Raja): Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif today met United Nations Secretary-General Mr. António Guterres on the sidelines of the 80th Session of the UN General Assembly.
The meeting was held in a warm and cordial atmosphere. The Prime Minister reaffirmed Pakistan’s strong commitment to multilateralism, with the United Nations at its core, in addressing today’s most pressing global challenges. He appreciated the Secretary-General’s remarkable leadership in promoting international peace, stability, and inclusive global governance, particularly in amplifying the voice of developing countries.
The Prime Minister thanked the Secretary-General for acknowledging Pakistan’s rescue and relief efforts during last year’s devastating floods. He highlighted the urgent need for concerted global action, including mobilization of additional climate finance, to mitigate the severe impacts of climate change on vulnerable countries such as Pakistan.
The Prime Minister also raised issues of critical national and regional importance, including the Jammu and Kashmir dispute, violations of the Indus Waters Treaty, and externally sponsored terrorism. He reiterated Pakistan’s call for a just and peaceful settlement of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute in line with UN Security Council resolutions, and commended the Secretary-General’s efforts towards de-escalation of tensions between Pakistan and India.
On the situation in Gaza, the Prime Minister expressed deep concern over the worsening humanitarian crisis. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s support for an immediate ceasefire, unhindered humanitarian access, and a credible political process leading to a viable and independent Palestinian state.
Reiterating Pakistan’s commitment to constructive engagement as a member of the UN Security Council, the Prime Minister assured that Pakistan would continue to play its role in promoting international peace and security.
The Secretary-General lauded Pakistan’s strong and principled voice at the United Nations, including its vital contributions at the Security Council. Both sides agreed on the importance of strengthening the UN’s indispensable role in advancing global peace, stability, and development.
