Islamabad, September 16, 2025 (Kamran Raja): Pakistan celebrated the first anniversary of the Suki Kinari (SK) Hydropower Station’s commercial operations, with Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives, Ahsan Iqbal, hailing the project as a landmark achievement under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).
Since commencing operations, the SK Hydropower Station has generated 2.8 billion kWh of electricity, contributing significantly to Pakistan’s energy security by diversifying the power mix, reducing reliance on imported fuels, and supporting the country’s shift toward clean, renewable energy.
Speaking at a ceremony held in Islamabad, Minister Ahsan Iqbal emphasized the strategic importance of the project, describing it as a symbol of CPEC’s success in fostering green development. He praised the project’s performance, its contribution to job creation, and its role in ensuring affordable and sustainable energy for Pakistan’s future.
“The Suki Kinari Hydropower Station represents Pakistan’s commitment to clean energy and sustainable growth. It stands as a beacon of our enduring partnership with China under CPEC and a step forward in strengthening energy security for our people,” said Ahsan Iqbal.
On behalf of the Government of China, Mr. Shi Yuanqiang, Charge d’Affaires of the Chinese Embassy in Pakistan, highlighted the SK Hydropower Station as a flagship project of CPEC. He reaffirmed China’s commitment to advancing cooperation with Pakistan in green energy and other sectors to jointly build an upgraded version of CPEC.
The SK Hydropower Station, located in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, has already created thousands of direct and indirect employment opportunities and continues to provide reliable, clean electricity to millions of Pakistani households.
