ISLAMABAD, 7 September, 2026 (Kamran Raja) – A 20-member special committee has been constituted on the directives of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to review the administrative and operational affairs of the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) and recommend comprehensive reforms. According to sources in the Ministry of Health, the committee comprises prominent health experts from both the public and private sectors. It will examine the management structure, administrative affairs and overall functioning of PIMS and submit recommendations aimed at improving the hospital’s performance and patient care. The committee will present its report to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who will take a final decision regarding reforms at PIMS in light of its recommendations. The government has also decided to establish a Board of Governors to oversee the affairs of PIMS. The board will comprise representatives and professionals from different walks of life. The formation of the reform committee follows the tragic fire at PIMS on August 26, in which 14 newborn babies lost their lives. Following the incident, eight officials, including the executive director of PIMS, were suspended, while criminal proceedings were also initiated against the suspended officials. The government is expected to take further measures based on the committee’s findings to strengthen administration, improve safety standards and ensure better healthcare services at the hospital.
