New York, 25 September, 2026 (Nosheen): Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres in New York on the sidelines of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, where they discussed key global and regional developments, including peace, security and the situation in the Middle East. Prime Minister Shehbaz reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to multilateralism and emphasized the central role of the United Nations in promoting international peace and development. He reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and appreciated Secretary-General Guterres’ leadership and efforts for the advancement of humanity and adherence to the UN Charter. The two leaders discussed the situation in the Middle East, with Prime Minister Shehbaz stressing the importance of dialogue and diplomacy to reduce regional tensions and reaffirming Pakistan’s commitment to peace and stability. He also reiterated Pakistan’s support for the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state. The prime minister raised concerns over the growing trend of Islamophobia and called for effective international measures to counter the phenomenon. Developments in Afghanistan and what Pakistan described as an increase in terrorism originating from Afghan soil were also discussed.
