A meeting of NDMA with all concerned agencies was held today to review the monsoon situation. Acting Chairman NDMA chaired the meeting. Acting Chairman NDMA reviewed the flow of rivers including major dams during the recent monsoon. The Meteorological Department said that heavy rains have occurred in Punjab and Sindh, while more heavy rains are expected in the northern areas of Punjab, Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa from July 26 to August 1.
The Provincial Disaster Management Authorities informed about the relief and rehabilitation measures after the recent rains. The Federal Flood Division said that Tarbela Dam is 81% full while Mangala Dam is 77% full. Provincial bodies should take steps to remove encroachments in the watercourse of river Ravi near Shahdara Bridge and Mangla Dam in order to deal with any emergency situation. Acting Chairman directed to strengthen coordination between departments to remove encroachments in adjacent areas of rivers, to educate the public about the possible dangers of monsoon and to protect rivers and reservoirs during monsoon season.
