LONDON, 26 September, 2026 (Ghufran): England wicketkeeper-batter Jos Buttler has been ruled out of the third and final ODI against Sri Lanka at The Oval on Sunday after sustaining an injury during the second match in Leeds. The 36-year-old suffered the injury while running between the wickets during England’s 16-run defeat by Sri Lanka at Headingley. Buttler, who scored 69 runs, his highest ODI score in three years, received treatment from England physio Steve Haw before retiring hurt. He later returned to the crease but was dismissed soon afterwards. The extent of his injury remains unclear, with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) expected to provide an update after an MRI scan next week. The ECB has called up uncapped batter Dan Lawrence as Buttler’s replacement for the series decider. Buttler’s absence is expected to provide an opportunity for emerging wicketkeeper-batter Jordan Cox to feature in England’s playing XI and take over wicketkeeping duties. Sri Lanka levelled the three-match series 1-1 with their victory at Headingley after England won the opening ODI, setting up a decisive final match at The Oval.
