DORTMUND, 10 October, 2026 (Kamran Raja): Niclas Fuellkrug scored a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser as Werder Bremen came from behind to secure a 2-2 draw against Bundesliga leaders Borussia Dortmund on Friday. Making his first return to Dortmund since leaving the club for West Ham in 2024, Fuellkrug headed home from a free-kick in the dying moments after Bremen scored twice in the final 10 minutes. The result ended Dortmund’s winning start to the season after four consecutive victories and gave Bayern Munich an opportunity to move to the top of the table with a win away at Augsburg on Saturday. Dortmund struggled to create clear chances in the first half against Bremen’s disciplined defence. Marcel Sabitzer came close with a direct free-kick, while Ludovit Reis missed an opportunity on the counter-attack for the visitors. Dortmund increased their pressure after the break, but Bremen goalkeeper Karl Hein produced several impressive saves to keep his side in the game. Arsenal loanee Ethan Nwaneri appeared to score for Dortmund with an overhead kick around the hour mark, but the goal was ruled out following a foul in the build-up. Daniel Svensson finally broke Bremen’s resistance in the 80th minute, finishing from close range on a counter-attack. Nico Schlotterbeck doubled Dortmund’s advantage five minutes later with a header from a corner, seemingly putting the hosts in control. However, Bremen mounted a remarkable late comeback when Reis fired a powerful low shot into the net in the 88th minute before Fuellkrug headed home the equaliser in stoppage time. Fuellkrug said he had been looking forward to returning to Dortmund, describing the club as a great team where he had enjoyed an excellent spell. Dortmund coach Niko Kovac expressed disappointment with the result, acknowledging that the match was not over until the final whistle. The draw leaves Dortmund at risk of losing their position at the top of the Bundesliga standings, depending on Bayern Munich’s result.
