Guwahati, 30 September, 2026 (Kamran Raja): Indian captain Shubman Gill created history on Wednesday by smashing the fastest double century in One-Day International (ODI) cricket during India’s match against the West Indies in Guwahati. Gill reached the 200-run mark in just 117 balls, becoming only the second Indian batter after Rohit Sharma to score more than one ODI double century. His spectacular innings included 24 fours and seven sixes as India chased a challenging target of 406 runs. Gill had previously scored an ODI double century against New Zealand in Hyderabad in 2023. Earlier in the innings, he completed his 11th ODI century in only 62 balls, including five sixes and 10 fours, setting a new record for the fastest ODI century by an Indian captain and surpassing Rohit Sharma’s previous mark. The century was also Gill’s second consecutive ODI hundred and his third successive century in ODIs played in India, while only Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers, with four consecutive centuries each, have recorded a longer streak on Indian soil. Gill had also scored 110 off 108 balls in the opening ODI. In the second match, he formed a 192-run opening partnership with Rohit Sharma by the time he reached his century. Earlier, the West Indies posted 405 for seven, their highest-ever ODI total, with John Campbell scoring 101 off 68 balls, captain Shai Hope making 104 off 94 balls and Amir Jangoo hitting 114 off 77 balls, including 13 fours and three sixes. For India, Kuldeep Yadav was the leading bowler with two wickets for 65 runs.
