ISLAMABAD, 09 August 2026 (Kamran Raja): Pakistan’s tennis veterans have created history by securing a silver medal in the 45+ category at the ITF Masters World Team Championships in Portugal, marking the country’s best-ever performance at the prestigious international event.Pakistan’s impressive campaign ended with a closely contested final against top seeds and tournament favourites Spain at the Jamor Tennis Centre in Portugal.In the decisive second singles match, Pakistan’s Aqeel Khan was defeated 6-4, 6-2 by Spain’s Francisco Javier Martinez Baena, who was among the leading performers of the tournament.

Aqeel Khan had enjoyed an outstanding run throughout the championship, recording a series of impressive victories in singles and doubles alongside former Pakistan No. 1 Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi.Pakistan’s journey to the final featured notable victories over the United States, Canada, hosts Portugal and Sweden, securing the team a historic place on the championship podium.Competing against more than 30 countries and over 300 players, Pakistan emerged as the only Asian nation to win a medal in the 45+ category at the championship.The historic silver medal highlights the determination, experience and competitive spirit of Pakistan’s veteran tennis players and represents a significant achievement for the country on the international Masters tennis circuit.
